"Shawna"
oil on canvas
This painting was my first submission for Karin Jurick's biweekly challenge on
Different Strokes from Different Folks Dec. 3, 2008. In this challenge we were asked to paint our interpretation of a photo of Karin's work boots. I wasn't planning to enter the challenge but I kept seeing a painting of my Gordon Setter Shawna curled up next to Karin's boots. I barely finished my painting before the deadline. Since then I decided it needed to be developed further so I included more of Shawna in the painting as you can see.
This sweetheart of a dog was rescued from a shelter and was only hours from being put down. Shawna was a year old when we adopted her and has been part of our family for 8 years. She still looks and acts like a pup except for her graying muzzle, which I love to paint. You will be seeing more of her I’m sure, since she is a great model in front of my camera.

What a wonderful painting. I love how you have incoporated the boots with your beautiful dog - just like she is waiting for her walk.
ReplyDeleteI also rescued a dog and he is the most adorable character. I hope one day I can paint him as well as you have painted Shawna.

Touching and very well done painting, Carol! Thank you for adding yourself as a follower! I am honored!
ReplyDeleteLucky Shawna to be adopted and loved so well...
There's nothing but love in that expression. What a beatutiful talent you have.
ReplyDeleteYour kind comment to me on joining the DS challenge led me to your site and thank goodness as this is a joy. Love the Gordon Setter and will watch your work often. Thanks for the welcome.
ReplyDeleteI love this painting so much,, the intensity, the composition, the texture!!
ReplyDeleteGreat Colours!
Hi Carol, Thanks for the visit and I'm glad I stopped by your blog. I had admired your skills on the portrait challenge and your dog painting is a wonderful captured moment. What an excellent way to make Karin's boots your own. (Shawna's eyes say you won't be leaving in those boots without her!) I feel a little like a kindred spirit out here in Washington with a little milder seasons but definitely all four of them. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate all you comments and wonderful interpretations of my painting of Shawna. This is my first painting of a dog in oil and look forward to doing more.
ReplyDeleteCarol, what a beautiful painting this is. There is such warmth in it.
ReplyDeleteI love this painting, Carol. You did a beautiful job with the dog and I hope to see more.
ReplyDeleteRich brush strokes I like that.
ReplyDeleteHi Carol,
ReplyDeleteI know this painting was of Karin's boots, but I can't take my eyes off your dog! You really captured Shawna's sweetness. Thank goodness you rescued her!
David - Thanks for checking my blog and your nice comment.
ReplyDeleteAnnie - I am really pleased that you can see the same thing I see in my wonderful sweet dog. Thanks for stopping by.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great painting! And what a priceless canine expression you've captured! Rescue animals hold a special place in my heart ... your Shawna is so beautiful ... I look forward to seeing more of her in future paintings. :)
ReplyDeleteCarol,I just love this portrait of Shawna, and what a sweet face she has. I love how you have incorporated her presence in your blog. I must do more of my dog Jade, also a rescue.
